Dr. Matthew Johnson, Sr

The Every Church A Peace Church (ECAPC) Board of Directors is proud to announce Dr. Matthew V. Johnson, Sr. as its National Director effective September 1, 2008.

A pastor, preacher, scholar, writer, lecturer, administrator, and servant of the people Dr. Johnson has been in the ministry for over 25 years. Born in Hackensack, NJ, Dr. Johnson was reared in both NJ and Lawrenceville, VA.

He was licensed to preach in 1979, shortly before he entered Morehouse College where he pursued a double major in Philosophy and History and graduated with honors in l983. He went on to earn the M.A. degree in Religious Studies and a Ph.D. degree in Philosophical Theology from the Divinity School at the University of Chicago . He completed two years of post doctorate work in Psychoanalytic Training at Duke University in conjunction with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . Additionally, he is currently pursuing post doctoral studies in the Psychotherapy Program at the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in Washington, DC .

Highly recognized for his capable leadership, Dr. Johnson is indeed a visionary and will lead the organization in pursuit of its goal of engaging churches in organizing their peace and justice witness to address issues of poverty, militarism/violence, racism, and/or gender bias as well as related daily conflicts and challenges. With Dr. Johnson at the national helm, ECAPC can continue its capacity building efforts which are designed to help congregations collaborate with other congregations and organizations to address issues of peace and justice.

Having served on the Board of Directors of ECAPC as Corporate Secretary since 2007, Dr. Johnson brings a plethora of church and community leadership experience and will lead the organization to its rightful place as a national pillar of the prophetic, nonviolent direct action of Jesus the Christ.
